Jaakko Eino Kalevi (FI)
Jaakko Eino Kalevi is the moniker of Jaakko Savolainen, the currently Berlin-based electronic pop artist and a former tram driver in Helsinki. He has released music in various styles since 2001 but gained wider fame in his homeland with second full length, a synth pop album “Modern Life” (Helmi Levyt, 2010), followed in 2011 by “Töölö Labyrinth”, a jazz album in the vein of mid-period Jimi Tenor. In 2013 JEK’s career got rocketed by signing to UK’s Weird World / Domino label and releasing his breakthrough EP “Dreamzone”. In June 2015 JEK released his first full length album on Weird World to ecstatic reviews from the international music press. Mixed in New York, the self-titled, ten-track collection finds Jaakko on spellbinding form, composing sumptuous and wildly original music that teems with ideas. On the album one can hear a pastel-shaded blend of saxophone-stoked soft rock, electronic pop, and disco, both romantic and melancholic, sometimes bearing resemblances to modern pop eccentrics Ariel Pink or Connan Mockasin. Numerous tours in Europe, shows in Japan and a short US tour in May have helped to grow his fanbase even more.
